When the Prosthetic Eye is completed, you will be instructed on how to insert and remove it.
Periodic inspection and a cleaning regimen is very important in maintaining the Articial eye. Lack of regular professional cleaning and polishing can cause discomfort, irritation to the orbital tissue and lead to severe discharge and infection.
The Artifical eye (Ocular Prosthesis) is made of acrylic which has a high affinity for naturally secreted proteins. These proteins, together naturally secreted salt deposits, build up on the surface of the prosthesis causing a rough layer and hazy appearance. Scratches are common and almost unavoidable. They usually occur from dust particles that settle on the surface of the prosthesis causing the wearer to rub the eye and thereby scratching the surface.
Your Artificial eye/Haptic Scleral Lens has to be examined regularly in order to assess the fitting. These follow-up examination should be done at least once a year throughout your life to assist in maintaining your orbital health. A brief visit to the Ocularist whereby polishing the surface molecules of the acrylic, will ensure removal of surface scratches and the build up deposits.
Any slight changes that occur in the orbit throughout the months or years could result in the prosthesis no longer fitting comfortably and will certainly cause discomfort and discharge. Should these very slight changes occur to the orbit, it would necessitate an adjustment or build-up to the acrylic in order to correct the prosthetic fit. |
